TIPS FOR WEDDING GOWN SHOPPING

What’s the first thing that pops into your mind once the engagement excitement settles in? Wedding dress shopping 😍

While I’m sure you want to drop everything and drag your BFFs to the nearest bridal boutique the very next day, I challenge you to stop and think.

Looking for your wedding gown is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning but it can also be one of the most stressful. By taking some time to let the adrenaline run its course, you can actually save yourself a LOT of time and stress by planning a few things out.

Here are a few simple tips to make wedding gown shopping a little easier!

Keep your entourage small: I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “too many cooks in the kitchen” Well that definitely applies with wedding dress shopping. Having others' opinions can be helpful but at the end of the day you want to pick the dress you feel most beautiful in. If you bring 10 people to your appointment it is going to be almost impossible to get everyone on the same page. Bringing a small entourage of close family and friends will save you a lot of stress.

Have an idea of what you’re looking for: but nothing too specific! Sometimes it’s easier to go into your bridal appointment knowing what colors and silhouettes you have in mind to narrow down your search. But, going in with a very detailed description of what you want in a “perfect” dress can be frustrating if the bridal shop can’t provide you with what you’re looking for. Or if they can and you end up not liking it after all, you’re back to square one!

Keep an open mind: With all that being said above, keeping an open mind will ultimately make for the most enjoyable dress shopping experience. You may try a gown on you never would have picked out for yourself but end up falling in love with it. Wedding dresses can be full of surprises!

Wear the right undergarments: A dress can look totally different if you’re wearing the right undergarments compared to if you’re not. Even though this may be your first time trying on dresses, you still should get the full effect of the dress by wearing undergarments close to or similar to what you’ll be wearing on your big day.

Know your budget: The first thing you want to do when walking into the bridal shop is try on the first amazing dress you see. If you fall in love and the dress is out of your budget it’s heartbreaking. Knowing and sticking to your budget will help narrow down options and prevent you from getting carried away. Also, keep in mind all the bridal accessories such as the veil, jewelry, and shoes have to factor into your budget as well.

Eat/drink something beforehand: Being hangry is real!! You want to be fully energized and ready to shop, because trying on wedding dresses is exhausting. Make sure to have plenty of water with you and maybe even sneak in a granola bar for when you feel yourself starting to crash.

Always book an appointment: Appointments usually aren't necessary but I highly recommend it. The stylists in the bridal boutiques know what they’re doing, they can help you every step of the way and do everything they can to find the dress of your dreams. Having an appointment also means 1-on-1 undivided attention. If you go in without an appointment and end up needing assistance, it can be really difficult to find someone who isn’t busy and can help you.

Take pictures or videos: There is absolutely zero pressure to buy a dress, especially the very first time you look. Your first day can be so crazy it ends up being kind of a blur; so try and take pictures and even videos of all the dresses you felt some type of way about! Videos are great so you can see how the dress moves with your body when you walk/dance. These photos/videos will be nice to have when you’re less overwhelmed and feel like you can try to narrow down your options a bit. It’s also helpful because if you find yourself continuing to go back and look at the photo of one particular dress over and over again, that might be a sign!

These are just a few simple tricks to make shopping for your wedding gown the most enjoyable experience possible. Saying “yes” to a dress will be a moment you want to cherish for the rest of your life, so it’s definitely worth it to take these extra steps to make sure it’s a stress-free, happy day!
